EPA Applauds Environmental Champions in New York

Center for the Urban Environment was thrilled to be a recipient of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2008 Environmental Quality Awards which honors individuals and organizations who have contributed significantly to improving the environment. The award ceremony, which took place on April 25, honored forty-six individuals and organizations from EPA’s Region II. "These exemplary environmental stewards have gone above and beyond for environmental change in local communities," said Regional Administrator Alan J. Steinberg. "Let their extraordinary contributions remind us all that we can make our world a better place and individuals really inspire others and make a lasting difference."

The 2008 Environmental Quality Award is indicative of the Center’s unprecedented growth over the last several years, particularly marked by a move to new, expansive green headquarters. The Center’s commitment to sustainability can serve as an example to other organizations as sustainability in action.
Green Brooklyn 2008: Are You In?

Over 1,000 New Yorkers flocked to Brooklyn Center for the Urban Environment's 3rd Annual Green Brooklyn event in September 2007, the borough's largest celebration of environmentally conscious programs, projects, and initiatives in New York City.

On September 20, 2008, the streets of downtown Brooklyn will crawl with New Yorkers eager to find out more about what's going on in their own backyards and how they can get involved.

Each year, Green Brooklyn presents more than a basic introduction to all things green. In past years, attendees were able to walk away with composting bins, win an energy efficient computer, drop off old clothes to be recycled, and learn how a local nonprofit is creating the borough’s first LEED-Certified ‘green’ building for commercial interiors.

The Greener Way for Businesses to Make Greenbacks

Over 130 local business leaders and supporters gathered at powerHouse Arena in Brooklyn on January 31 for the launch of the Sustainable Business Network of NYC, an exciting new initiative of the Center and the newest chapter of the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE). The network will connect, support and promote NYC owned and operated businesses, and educate residents about the personal, community and environmental benefits of buying goods locally.

The economic landscape plays a vital role in the health of our city and its residents. The Sustainable Business Network of NYC is an exciting opportunity for the Center to further its educational mission and commitment to environmental health by connecting and supporting businesses, workforce, entrepreneurs and consumers in an economy dedicated to New York City’s communities.

In attendance (and flexing their sustainability muscle) was Brooklyn Brewery, Ice Stone, Green Apple Cleaners, Just Food, New York Industrial Retention Network, Bettencourt Green Building Supplies, Green Depot, Go Green, EcoSystems Brand, Solar Energy Systems, Green Harvest Technologies, R&E Brooklyn, PDS Development Corporation, Own Energy, Full Spectrum, Wearable Collections, Earth Advertising, and others.
